Troubleshooting the Recorder.

  1. " My Recorder will not connect to CR_Console" (i.e. the Connect Button does not enable).

Please check that the two LEDs are flashing alternately. If both LEDs are off please check the cable. In some cases the recorder will need to have the AA batteries installed.

If both LEDs are flashing the Recorder is trying to repair a damaged MMC or SD card. Please let the recorder complete this. Both LEDs will flash alternately when this is complete. If the Connect button does not light up disconnect the USB cable and try again. If the Recorder still tries to run the MMC or SD repair sequence (both LEDs flash) then the MMC or SD is probably faulty. You will need to change the MMC or SD card.

Check that the recorder is not switched on. If it is on simply switch it off please.

Minimize all programs and see if Windows is not trying to install the Recorder’s driver. This will happen if you have not used the USB port before (each port needs to be installed). To remedy please simply complete the installation.

If all else fails please restart your PC and try again.
  2. " I have inserted the MMC or SD into the Recorder but I still cannot read it via the USB."

If you inserted the MMC or SD card while the Recorder was connected to the USB port the MMC or SD card will not have been initialized and therefore will not be seen. To remedy this please simply unplug the USB cable. Check that the Recorder is switched off and insert the USB cable again.
  3. " The Red LED is on and does not go off when I insert the MMC or SD card."

The Recorder needs to be switched off when inserting (or removing) the MMC or SD card. Please switch the record switch off, wait a few seconds and switch it on. The recorder should now work. (If the Red LED remains on please check to see if the MMC or SD card is not full).
  4. " When I went to switch the recording off the Red LED is on."

You have run out of storage space on the MMC or SD card. Please upload your recordings and clear the MMC or SD card.
  5. " When I start a Recording the Red Led is on."

Please check to see if the MMC or SD card has been unseated (i.e. it is loose). Please switch the Recorder off then re-insert it. Alternatively the MMC or SD card is full. Please check this using CR_Console.
  6. " I checked the battery level using the USB interface but when the recording starts the Recorder switches off within 20 seconds (often with no Green LED)."

The batteries have gone very flat. This is often the case when you leave the recorder on by accident. During a recording when the Recorder sees that the battery is going flat it will terminate the recording and then switch on the Green LED. The Green Led drains the battery completely. The user later notices that the recorder is switched on and switches it off. The battery recovers it voltage (often to more than 2 Volts) but when the recorder starts to draw current it goes flat very quickly.
  7. " My recorder is dead and no LEDs come on at all."

Please check to see if the Record Slide switch is in the off position. If it is the recorder and made a long recording and switched off because of a flat battery. Connect to the USB and measure the battery level. If the battery is low please change it. It can be helpful to leave the battery measuring circuit active for 10 minutes. When we measure the battery level we draw 50mA (or so) from the battery in an attempt to detect the flat but outwardly recovered battery situation. The load drawn should kill off the battery within 5 minutes.
  8. " Both LEDs are on when I try to start a Recording."

The Recorder is faulty. Please call your dealer.
  9. " When I connect to a Multi Media Card it tells me the drive is not present even though I have already configured the drive configuration in the configuration menu"

A common problem that we see occurs when drives on the LAN are mapped to high order letters in the alphabets. For example if the LAN based backup drive is assigned to E: (assuming you have two partitions C: and D:). When the LAN cable is already in the Multi Media Drive is assigned to F:. When the LAN cable is not in the Multi-Media drive is assigned to E:. This will require that you re-configure the multi-media drive letter. We have also seen that if the multi-media drive has been assigned to say E:, when the LAN cable is plugged in it simply takes over the drive letter and the multi-media card’s assigned drive letter is lost. The simplest solution is a to ask if the LAN drives can be mapped lower down in the alphabet.

Some Tips about your Certified Audio Recorder.

  1. It is good practice to listen to the recording for a few moments once you have started it. This allows you to check the quality of the recording, It also allows you to check that the Recorder is working correctly.
  2. Pease always use the Recorder to clear the MMC or SD card. We have found that if you use your PC or other digital device to format the card that the card may loose some of it’s storage space.
The Recorder works with un-segmented FAT tables. If you insert the MMC or SD card into a multi-media reader and delete random files the recorder will make a recording in the largest un-segmented space available. This will leave you with open space that the Recorder cannot use.
  3. The MMC or SD card is only initialised on switch on. This occurs either when you start the Recorder or plug in the USB. If you insert the MMC or SD card while the Recorder is already on the memory card will not be seen.
Please do not remove the memory card while a recording or USB session is in progress. This can damage your memory card and you will loose data. If you are recording the audio will not be certified as the Recorder will not have been able to add the Certification to the last audio segment.
  4. Please wait if at all possible for the Recorder to complete the last action. When a recording is started or stopped the LEDs will flash until the requested action is complete. If you make a short recording the Recorder will take longer to switch off than when you make a long recording. This is because the Recorder is still making a new signing RSA key pair and until the new key pair is available it cannot sign the short recording’s certificate.
  5. When using a Multi Media Reader please eject the drive before removing the MMC or SD card. It is also acceptable to un-mount the drive(s) on the Multi-Media Reader using the “Safely Remove Icon” on your Tool Bar. This is over-kill as it requires you to un-plug and re-plug the USB cable. This is needed as Windows will often ‘cache data’ intended to be written to the MMC or SD until there is enough data to be written or the PC has the time to do so. This means that even if Windows has told you that an action has been completed this may not be the case. The act of ejecting or safely removing the device flushes the cache.
